The Background
The story of Mubahala takes place in the year 628 CE, during the Expedition of Tabuk. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) had received a revelation from Allah (SWT) that the Byzantine Empire was planning to attack Medina. In response, the Prophet (ﷺ) gathered an army of 30,000 Muslims and set out to meet the Byzantine forces.
On the way to Tabuk, the Prophet (ﷺ) stopped at a place called Wadi al-Raqim. There, he was met by a group of Christian priests from Najran. The priests had come to Medina to debate with the Prophet (ﷺ) about the nature of Jesus (AS). The Prophet (ﷺ) agreed to debate with the priests, and the two sides agreed to the terms of the debate.
The Debate
The debate took place in front of the entire Muslim army. The priests presented their case first, arguing that Jesus (AS) was the son of God and that he was crucified for the sins of humanity. The Prophet (ﷺ) responded by presenting the Islamic view of Jesus (AS). He argued that Jesus (AS) was a prophet of God, but not the son of God. He also argued that Jesus (AS) was not crucified, but was taken up to heaven alive.
The debate lasted for several hours, and neither side was able to convince the other. Finally, the Prophet (ﷺ) proposed that the two sides engage in Mubahala. Mubahala is a form of imprecation in which both sides call down the curse of God upon themselves if they are lying.
The priests were hesitant to engage in Mubahala, but they eventually agreed. The two sides then stood facing each other and called down the curse of God upon themselves if they were lying. The priests were immediately struck with a plague, and they all died within a few days.
The Significance of Mubahala
The Story of Mubahala is significant for a number of reasons. First, it shows the power of faith. The Prophet (ﷺ) and his family were outnumbered and outgunned by the Byzantine forces, but they were still able to stand up for their faith and defeat their enemies.
Second, the story of Mubahala shows the importance of unity. The Prophet (ﷺ) and his family were able to defeat their enemies because they were united in their faith. They were willing to stand up for what they believed in, even if it meant putting their own lives at risk.
Finally, the story of Mubahala shows the importance of truth. The Prophet (ﷺ) and his family were able to defeat their enemies because they were telling the truth. They were not afraid to speak out against the lies of their enemies, and they were confident that the truth would prevail.
The Story of Mubahala is a powerful and moving reminder of the importance of standing up for what you believe in, even when it is difficult. This story is a source of inspiration for Muslims around the world, and it is a reminder that the truth will always prevail.
