What Is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a condition in which the body is unable to properly use glucose, or sugar, for energy. This can lead to a number of health problems, including weight loss, increased thirst and urination, and fatigue. In severe cases, diabetes can lead to coma or even death.

What Causes Diabetes in Dogs?

There are two main types of diabetes in dogs: type 1 and type 2. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which the body attacks and destroys the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. Insulin is a hormone that helps the body use glucose for energy.

Type 2 diabetes is more common in dogs than type 1 diabetes. It is caused by a combination of factors, including obesity, lack of exercise, and genetics. Type 2 diabetes can often be managed with diet and exercise, but some dogs may also need medication.

How To Prevent Diabetes in Dogs

There is no surefire way to prevent diabetes in dogs, but there are a number of things you can do to reduce your dog's risk of developing the disease. These include:

  • Keeping your dog at a healthy weight
  • Feeding your dog a healthy diet
  • Getting your dog regular exercise
  • Spaying or neutering your dog
  • Vaccinating your dog against certain diseases

  • Giving your dog insulin injections
  • Monitoring your dog's blood sugar levels
