Islam, as a comprehensive way of life, provides detailed guidance on all aspects of human behavior, including the use of substances that can alter one's mental or physical state. Within the vast corpus of Islamic teachings, there is a clear and unequivocal prohibition against the consumption of intoxicants, narcotics, and smoking, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a sound body and mind.

Prohibition in the Quran

The Quran, the primary source of Islamic law, explicitly forbids the consumption of intoxicants in numerous verses. In Surat al-Baqarah, Allah (SWT) declares:

O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone altars [to other than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid them that you may be successful.

Quran 2:219

This verse clearly establishes the prohibition of intoxicants, equating them with other forms of forbidden practices that lead to moral and spiritual degradation.

Prohibition in the Hadith

The teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) further reinforce the prohibition against intoxicants, narcotics, and smoking. In a well-known Hadith, the Prophet (PBUH) said:

Every intoxicant is Khamr (wine),and every Khamr is forbidden.

Sahih Muslim

This Hadith unequivocally prohibits all forms of intoxicants, regardless of their specific composition or level of intoxication.

Moreover, the Prophet (PBUH) also prohibited smoking, considering it a harmful and addictive practice. In another Hadith, he said:

Whoever drinks alcohol or smokes, Allah will not accept their prayer for forty days.

Tirmidhi

This Hadith not only emphasizes the prohibition of smoking but also highlights the spiritual consequences of violating this injunction.

Reasons for the Prohibition

The Islamic prohibition against intoxicants, narcotics, and smoking is based on several compelling reasons:

  1. Health Hazards: Intoxicants, narcotics, and smoking are all known to have detrimental effects on one's physical and mental health. They can impair judgment, damage the liver, weaken the immune system, and lead to addiction.
  2. Moral Depravity: Intoxicants and narcotics can lead to moral degradation, as they can cloud one's judgment and inhibitions. They can make individuals more susceptible to engaging in harmful or sinful behavior.
  3. Spiritual Impurity: Islam emphasizes the importance of maintaining a pure and wholesome state of mind and body. Intoxicants and narcotics can pollute the soul and hinder one's spiritual growth.
  4. Social Harm: Substance abuse can have devastating consequences for individuals, families, and the broader community. It can lead to crime, violence, broken relationships, and economic hardship.

Consequences of Violation

Violating the prohibition against intoxicants, narcotics, and smoking carries serious consequences, both in this world and the hereafter. In the Quran, Allah (SWT) warns:

The recompense of those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and strive upon earth to cause corruption is none but that they be killed or crucified or that their hands and feet be cut off from opposite sides or that they be imprisoned. That is for them a disgrace in this world; and in the Hereafter they will have a great punishment.

Quran 5:33

While the specific punishments mentioned in this verse may not always be implemented in modern Muslim societies, they serve as a reminder of the gravity of violating divine injunctions.

Moreover, substance abuse can lead to a host of negative consequences in this life, including:

  • Loss of health and well-being
  • Financial ruin
  • Broken relationships
  • Legal problems
  • Spiritual decline

The prohibition against smoking, intoxicants, and narcotics in Islam is a comprehensive and unequivocal commandment. Rooted in the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH),this prohibition is based on sound reasons, including the preservation of physical and mental health, the prevention of moral depravity, and the maintenance of spiritual purity. Violating this injunction carries serious consequences, both in this world and the hereafter. As Muslims, it is our duty to adhere to these divine directives and strive to live a life free from the harmful effects of substance abuse.
